"After careful and thorough evaluations in China and other countries, we finally chose Chengdu," said Shi Kesheng, vice president of Maersk Group. Four attractions of Chengdu brought about Maersk's final decision: competitiveness in business, high efficiency in government approvals, big talent pool as well as huge market potential, said Shi.

In recent years, lowering operating costs has become many global companies' new priority. Increasing numbers of foreign firms aim to make their footprints in the untapped western markets of China. Chengdu, the economic and financial hub of southwestern China, has been an ideal location for global companies to take advantage of the city's developed infrastructure, talented human capital, open environment as well as lower operating costs. At present, Chengdu has gradually formed a certain cluster of shared service center. Numerous world-class companies, including Accenture global delivery center, DHL Shared Services Center, Lafarge back-office services center, Amazon order fulfillment center, and domestic players like Alibaba and Tencent, have set up companies there.

Since 2008, more and more international companies have established their back-offices or development centers in the city, seeking lower operating costs, especially in the wake of global financial crisis. During the first half of 2009, Accenture, DHL, JPMorgan as well as Volkswagen opened their offices in Chengdu, and 134 "Fortune 500"-listed companies already have market presence in the city.

Maersk is considering to further increase investments in Chengdu as part of efforts to expand business in the western market, said Shao Wei, a managing director of Maersk.
